Information

The landscape for responsible material selection is continuously evolving, and the launch of LEED v5 Building Product Selection & Procurement credit has generated a lot of excitement…and questions. As the industry moves toward holistic material evaluation – balancing embodied carbon, ecosystem impact, equity, human health, and circularity – there is no time to waste in learning strategies to implement these principles on projects. The future is a world where all building materials are low-carbon, healthy, and circular with supply chain impacts mitigated or regenerative. The Building Products Selection and Procurement (BPSP) credit provides a framework and roadmap for assessing products that will drive meaningful change towards these outcomes in the next decade. This session will unpack the BPSP credit by breaking down the structure of this credit, helping project teams and manufacturers successfully navigate the requirements. The chair and vice-chair of the LEED Materials and Resources Technical Advisory Group and USGBC staff will share insights into the development of the credit, discuss its alignment with broader industry initiatives, and provide strategies for optimizing material choices to earn points in this credit. We will also explore the HPD Collaborative’s information management solutions, which offer practical tools for manufacturers and project teams to report on and identify products that align with the credit’s requirements. This session will dive into the long-term vision for material transparency and optimization, and the role that LEED v5 will play in shaping the industry moving forward. This session will equip participants with practical strategies to confidently approach product selection in LEED v5 from the perspective of those designing, specifying, and manufacturing products.
