Information

Every real estate asset runs on a human operating system: the people who design it, build it, operate it, use it, live around it, and make the products and materials that go into it. Yet many organizations still treat investments in social impact as values-based decisions instead of decisions that can produce measurable return. That framing slows adoption, even when organizations have a strong intent to positively impact people.

This session reframes social sustainability in commercial real estate as a strategic approach that can strengthen the outcomes owners and operators care about, including employee and customer retention, service reliability, risk exposure, and trust. A four-speaker panel representing SEAM, UL, JLL, and IMEG will connect people-centered investments to practical decisions that teams make throughout planning, design, procurement, construction, and operations.

The panel will share how teams can move from broad commitments to measurable outcomes, using structured approaches that translate into decision-ready signals. SEAM (Social Equity Assessment Method) certification will serve as one example of how a standard and scorecard can create and substantiate positive people-focused outcomes in the built environment. The session will also reference complementary certification pathways already recognized by many teams, including LEED v5 and the WELL Equity rating.

Interactive element: Participants will complete a brief, guided ROI estimation using the ROSSI calculator (Return on Social Sustainability Investment), grounded in research-backed formulas, and leave with a repeatable approach they can apply to their own projects and portfolios. Participants may use their own inputs or research-cited defaults where needed.

By leveraging ROI estimation, attendees can make smarter decisions to support internal prioritization and resource allocation. After the session, they will be able to connect impact-focused investing in people to business value, revolutionizing the way real estate impacts the world.
