Community-Scale Solutions

Information

It is easy to understand why community-scale projects have huge environmental and social impacts — they encompass multiple buildings and everything in between. What is less obvious, however, is that, from buildings to communities, there is an exponential opportunity to make this impact positive.

First, with numerous buildings requiring infrastructure, resources, and services, communities can explore scale benefits. Second, with a broader physical interface with the urban fabric, they have potential to reverberate through their surroundings. Well-managed, these factors together enable a truly holistic approach to sustainable development, delivering not only project-specific benefits but also industry and social transformation.

To show how communities can be strategic allies in building a healthy and sustainable world for all, this session puts together LEED and WELL cases tied to the central question: "How can community-scale projects extend their benefits beyond their boundaries?"

The session will provide a global perspective of community development and demonstrate how to explore scale and connectivity in diverse contexts. Using LEED v4.1 for Communities as a guide, speakers will introduce the panel with three brief presentations showing, from assessment to implementation, how to map out strategies for Decarbonization, Quality of Life, and Resilience.

The first case, The Heights, will focus on Decarbonization and how to drive economic opportunities to develop new green businesses. The second, Eurogarden, will focus on Quality of Life and how urban design and governance can lead to inclusive mobility, tailored placemaking, community engagement, and democratic spaces. The third, will focus on Resilience and how vulnerability assessments and nature-based solutions can enhance equity by providing climate safety for all. After, an insightful conversation about communities, sustainability, equity, and innovation will take place.

Beyond inspiration, attendees will gain technical guidance to harness the ripple effect of these powerful projects and deliver impact beyond their boundaries.
