Emissis Presents: Reducing operational carbon: optimization strategies for existing commercial buildings

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 3:45 PM to 4:45 PM · 1 hr. (US/Eastern)
Exhibit Hall - Education Lab - Booth 1020

Information

Participants are introduced to a structured framework for diagnosing energy waste, distinguishing symptoms from root causes, and selecting appropriate optimization strategies. Topics include existing-building commissioning, refrigeration and cooling controls, chiller heat-transfer enhancement, electrical system performance, monitoring, and measurement and verification (M&V) practices. The course emphasizes the importance of defining measurement boundaries, verifying reported savings, and understanding how operational changes translate into carbon reductions. Through practical examples and case studies from food distribution, hospitality, and other commercial facilities, attendees learn how to evaluate retrofit opportunities, assess performance claims, and apply IPMVP-aligned principles to energy savings calculations. The presentation also explores stakeholder roles, decision-making frameworks, and best practices for ensuring performance persistence over time. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to support evidence-based energy management decisions and help building owners pursue meaningful operational carbon reductions.

Learning Objective #2
Refrigeration Systems: Participants will learn how to evaluate refrigeration system performance and identify opportunities to reduce energy use while maintaining required temperatures, product protection, and equipment reliability.
Learning Objective #3
Chiller Systems: Participants will learn how to assess chiller and heat-transfer performance, recognize factors that influence efficiency, and evaluate strategies for optimizing cooling-system energy use.
Learning Objective #4
Electrical Distribution: Participants will learn how to distinguish among key electrical performance metrics, including energy consumption, demand, power factor, and power quality, and understand their role in operational carbon reduction.
